CV

Mariette Auvray is a french filmmaker and musician, born in 1986, based in Paris. She studied cinema at Panthéon-Sorbonne University of Paris, the University of Toronto (Innis College), and is a graduate of the National School of Decorative Arts of Paris since 2011. Since 2007, her practice has focused on making intimate short films in super8 and documentaries featuring people and communities who propose alternative ways of thinking about the contemporary world. She directed « La Femme Côtelette » (2013), which gives voice to an old protestant bourgeois lady recounting her life as a woman in France in the 1950s. The film received several audience awards including the Best French Short Film Award of the Créteil Women’s Film Festival in 2013. In recent years, she has confronted the youth of Jerusalem, a generation in search of meaning in a context of war and political extremism, with her first feature film « Goodbye Jerusalem » (2019) co-directed with Gabriel Laurent, and which received the Etoiles de la Scam Award 2020. She also explored the issues of social construction and feminist claims among the women of her generation in Japan, with the short documentary “The Mirrors of Tokyo” (2018), as well as in Israel and the West Bank with “Palestinians”, a webseries released in 2020 on the Courrier International online. In parallel with her documentaries, Mariette has shot several short films in super8, ranging from the film-poem « A nos parts absent » (2020) to the short portrait « Feux » (2020) and the travel diary « Childhood » (2010). In parallel to her work as a director, Mariette teaches video at ENSCI-Les Ateliers, is a member of Efferalgang online radio station, and has been a member of many post-punk bands (Pussy Patrol, BCBG, Eyes Behind) and toured in Europe, the United States, China and Australia with her different formations.
